do good \\ be. do. have.

do good \\ be. do. have.

This came from a friend today when I ask her about our do good tee. What does it mean to you?

“Some of the very best things we have done with our girls have been the verb and ACTION part of love. The DO GOOD kind of love. The going to feed the homeless at the shelter, babysitting for the pregnant single moms at care net pregnancy center, Valentine’s parties at faith refuge, stocking and sorting food at the food pantry… etc!

Ashton and I are able to give our kids MORE THAN ENOUGH. An abundance of joy and adventure and travel and things. But what’s been most important has been two fold. What we have withheld and awareness of the gifts.

  1. What we have withheld from them… Ipads etc! We are a no technology home (other than our phones and a rarely turned on TV). Also withholding over scheduled lives. They choose one activity a season to participate in and that’s it. We limit our yes’ BIG TIME outside of our home and the 4 of us.

  2. Perspective. Although their lives look normal to the people and close community around them… we have to give them eyes to see its not normal to most. Each time we step on an airplane we say “gosh! Can you believe you get to fly in the air? Most kids have never gotten to experience this! What a GIFT!” This is the reason we have taken them into the lowly or dark places… that’s where Jesus went. And that’s the only way they will see how UNREAL amazing their life truly is. Empathy. Compassion. Awareness.

We get to BE who we were created to be first. Then out of that we DO. Then lastly because we ARE and DID we can HAVE. Be. Do. Have. So important that they fall in that order!”

Her words are beautiful and honest. I am now challenged to find ways to do more good because not only am I equipped to do so, I want walk along side my girls and show them how to love and serve.

Did you know that doing good things for others can have such a huge impact on our mental state? Ever heard of The Happiness Trifecta? Think mental fireworks combined of oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin all working together in your brain at once. When we do good for others, our brain naturally releases oxytocin. Oxytocin then boosts your mood and counteracts the effects of cortisol- the terrible stress hormone.

AND. The higher the levels of oxytocin are, the more you want to help others which also boosts serotonin and dopamine. Neuro-fireworks of joy, folks. Do good for others because does good things for you too.
